Traveling to and from Nauvoo

On the 2 hour drive to Nauvoo, I realized that Doe, and possibly Ubby, got my love of math (which I got from my dad.) BA and I started giving the kids math story problems. Boo (5th grade) got bored early on- after a question or two. Doe (2nd grade) hung in there begging for more "tricky" math questions for at least 20 minutes.

During this time I was able to teach him percents- 10% was easy of course, but then he loved the challenge of figuring out 20% and 30% of misc. numbers. We also did multiplication and then division as well.

And, as always, Ubby(Kindergarten) wanted in on the action as well. We did addition and subtraction as he begged for more and more questions as long as the other kids were doing math.

On the way home we made our yearly stop at McDonald's for some lunch. (We usually bring lunch but got lazy this time.) Shortly thereafter, Doe announced that he didn't feel well and he laid down on the floor.

Within 10 minutes Boo and Ubby were on the floor as well, siting the fact that they too didn't feel well, and therefore needed to lay on the floor. This might have worked if they hadn't started arguing. Apparently, Boo was "squishing" Ubby's feet.

After asking and then threatening Boo and Ubby to sit back up on their seats with their seat belts on, the whining began. "Why does Doe get to lay down on the ground?"

"Because he has a history of spewing lunch out when we are driving....and, he wasn't arguing."

"We won't argue anymore! Please..." etc.

Sometimes it pays to get nauseous at the drop of a hat. I know that if we were ever again driving in a rented 12 passenger van with my parents and youngest 3 siblings and Doe said, "Hey, I don't feel well." that the van would immediately stop to let Doe spew outside as opposed to inside the van.

And...

I am always aware of the color of Doe's face when we travel. If it looks like it's getting a little more on the pale side, we find an exit. Unfortunately, he takes after(sigh)...me.
